LOVE ETHIC PROJECT

TLC is excited to play a key role on an innovative new project on love as a foundation for ethical frameworks, in collaboration with the Institute for Ethics and the Common Good at the University of Notre Dame and with funding from the John Templeton Foundation. Join our efforts to build a global network of researchers contributing to these ideas!

THE LOVE ETHIC

A Shared Ethics of Love

The Love Ethic refers to ethical traditions that root moral significance in something shared by all people—our dignity, our humanity, and our capacity for connection. These approaches center interpersonal love as a guiding force in how we understand our responsibilities to one another, especially in moments of complexity, conflict, or division. At its core, the Love Ethic asks how love can inform the choices we make, the relationships we build, and the communities we hope to create.

The Love Ethic in Contemporary Context

While the Love Ethic has roots in many cultural, philosophical, and religious traditions, it continues to grow and evolve in response to modern challenges. Scholars today draw on these ideas to think differently about issues such as justice, inequality, migration, disability, political division, philanthropy, and emerging technologies. Across these conversations, the Love Ethic serves as a lens for imagining more humane systems and more connected communities.

An Interdisciplinary Approach

Research on the Love Ethic is inherently interdisciplinary. It draws on insights from psychology, anthropology, sociology, philosophy, and other social sciences to better understand love as a moral force and a foundation for ethical decision-making. By bringing these perspectives together, this project aims to develop a richer understanding of what a love-centered ethical framework can offer the world today.

EVENTS

TLC will host a number of events to highlight and inspire innovative scientific research that can inform scholarly understanding of the Love Ethic. This includes virtual and in-person love conferences.

LOVE ETHIC ADVISORY BOARD

We are eager to use this project to intentionally bring together scholars from across subdisciplines within psychology whose work intersects in its potential to inform understanding of the role of love in society. Our Project Advisory Board will include scholars from Developmental, Clinical, and Social Psychology who take various theoretical and methodological approaches. Their leadership will strengthen our shared vision of a global, collaborative community of love ethic researchers.
