"How To Feel Loved": An Hour with Sonja Lyubomirsky and Harry Reis

What do you get when two of the world’s leading experts on happiness and relationships write a book together? A framework for understanding when and why we feel loved, grounded in decades of science and brought to life through relatable storytelling.

The Love Consortium is honored to host Drs. Sonja Lyubomirsky and Harry Reis for our first “An hour with the authors” event, to take place virtually on May 6, 2026 at 1 PM Eastern Daylight Time. Drs. Lyubomirsky and Reis will share more about their latest book, “How to Feel Loved”— outlining the research behind the five mindsets that influence how we approach our relationships and, in turn, experience love.

Discussion will be moderated by TLC Interim Director, Dr. Gul Gunaydin and will focus on the science detailed in the book as well as the authors’ experience writing together, lessons learned and opportunities identified. Q&A with the audience will follow.

This virtual event is free and open to all to attend. Those registered by April 8 will be entered into a raffle to win one of five free copies of the book. Learn more about the book and order your own copy today by visiting https://howtofeelloved.com/.

Empathy: Approaches and Implications for a Divided World

Update: This event is currently full. If you would like to be added to a waitlist, please email theloveconsortium@unc.edu.

Are you attending the APS (Association for Psychological Science) Annual Convention in Barcelona, Spain this May?

The Love Consortium (TLC) invites you to join us for Empathy: Approaches and Implications for a Divided World. This full-day event will feature the latest research on empathy from scholars across multiple disciplines and geographies. Together, we’ll explore empathy’s role in early development, its implications for interpersonal relationships and group dynamics, as well as the potential costs to engaging in empathic behaviors across contexts. Importantly, this event seeks to create space for empathy researchers studying the construct from different approaches and using different methodologies to connect with one another, share insights, and learn from areas of convergence and disagreement. Through talks and discussion, we aim to identify both tensions and opportunities to build a more rigorous, collaborative, and impactful science of empathy. View the full event agenda.

More about the event
This event will take place in-person in Barcelona, Spain on May 28, 2026 and is an official partnership with the Association for Psychological Science. As such, although there are no additional fees to attend TLC’s Empathy Preconference, all participants must be registered for the broader APS convention in order to attend. You can learn more about registration fees and dates on the APS convention website. The registration link for the empathy preconference can be found under the “Sessions” tab during the registration process. If you have already registered for APS and would like to attend the empathy preconference, please follow these instructions to add the empathy preconference to your registration. Like our prior small conferences, we will curate the program to ensure ample time throughout the day for attendees to connect with one another and engage in intellectual discourse. All-day coffee, snacks, and lunch will be provided.

Call for Speakers: 2026 TLC Virtual Love Conference

The Love Consortium team is thrilled to announce our fourth Love Conference—to take place virtually on October 13, 2026.

Do you have a research question about love that you’ve been meaning to test with an existing dataset (or perhaps one on The Love Consortium Dataverse)? Well, here’s your chance! We’re opening speaker submissions early to give more researchers an opportunity to share their work.

As with our previous TLC Love Conferences, we welcome scholars from all career stages, geographies, and scientific disciplines to submit their research for consideration. In line with our new project on The Love Ethic we are especially eager to feature research and fresh perspectives on how love can be employed within moral and ethical frameworks. We also welcome work exploring the development of love (particularly among younger populations), how love motivates prosocial behavior, shapes interpersonal dynamics, or functions as an individual trait.

Following our last intellectually rich 2024 Love Conference (see the full event program here), we are thrilled to once again bring together researchers from around the world—this time virtually—to share findings, exchange ideas, and engage with the latest love research. TLC Founder Dr. Sara Algoe will give a keynote address on her new conceptual framework for the scientific study of love. It's sure to be a great event.

We are accepting submissions for three presentation formats:

  • Poster presentations

  • Flash talks (5 minutes)

  • Full talks (15-20 minutes)

You are welcome to submit for any and all formats for which you’d like your work to be considered.*

Submit your research!

Submissions will be evaluated through peer-review according to the following criteria:

  • Scientific contribution: To what extent does the research advance the science of love?

  • Methodological quality: How sound are the methods, analyses, and conclusions?

Submissions are due by July 15, 2026 and decisions will be announced by August 1.

We look forward to learning more about your work!

*Note: Final decisions regarding presentation format(s) will depend on reviewers' scores for each submission as well as overall programmatic experience.

WEBINARS

Join us for an upcoming informational webinar!  During our time together, we will give an overview of The Love Consortium Dataverse, explain the process to post a dataset description, and answer any questions you may have. Each webinar takes about 30 minutes, but we reserve the full hour for additional conversation, should the Q&A portion run over.

Register for a webinar

There are no webinars scheduled at this time. If you would like to schedule a private webinar for you or your lab, please reach out via our Contact page and we'll be happy to accommodate.
